Promises Kept: Raising Black Boys to Succeed in School and in Life

byDr. Joe Brewster

Dr. Joe Brewster and Michele Stephenson offer straight talk to this generation in PROMISES KEPT,

PROMISES KEPT is one of those books that can spark a much-needed discussion about race, life and the problems that black men seem to have in the world.

Not shying away from discussing how race and perception (coupled with fear and ignorance) can complicate the lives of a group of society that just want to have the same opportunities as others, this book really looks at how all of us can work together to put our best self forward.

I couldn't help but go back to my own childhood in Mississippi. We never had a conversation about race and perceptions that others might have of me being a person of color, but then again I found myself in a unique situation where I never experienced overt discrimination and prejudices. Not everyone is that fortunate, and especially for those individuals a book like this can help to not just encourage you towards your personal greatness but show that we are still as a country a work in progress.

In the chapter YOU BROUGHT HIM INTO THIS WORLD the authors address the issue of discipline and the belief that education really begins at home. Then they go on to discuss in the following chapter how to avoid things that can rob us of our valuable time.

Whether you have children of your own or just looking for what you can do to pay it forward with the next generation, PROMISES KEPT reminds us that all people have a right to the promise of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
